Mykonos Magic, tips for discovering the enchanting town with children

Mykonos Magic:

Family Fun in Greece's Island Paradise

Ah, Mykonos—the mere mention of its name conjures images of whitewashed buildings, azure seas, and parties that rival those of the Greek gods themselves. But what happens when you trade in your solo backpacker persona for a troupe of pint-sized adventurers? Fear not, fellow travelers, I’m here to guide you through the whimsical world of family travel to Mykonos with equal parts calm fun, delicious treats, and fantastic views.

Venturing into the realm of family travel often feels like embarking on a mythical quest—minus the dragons, of course. Fortunately, Mykonos offers a treasure trove of family-friendly activities amidst its sun-kissed shores. From leisurely beach days at Agios Ioannis to exploring the labyrinthine streets of Mykonos Town, there’s no shortage of adventures awaiting intrepid explorers of all ages.

We started off in little Venice, we got there first thing in the morning, before all the cruise ships began tendering passengers over and it got super crowded. The streets were quiet and empty and it was delightful to meander around leisurely and not elbow to elbow. My number one piece of advice: ALWAYS GET UP EARLY. Especially if there are a few things you’d like to see or do without the massive crowds.

Picture this: you find yourself wandering through the enchanting alleyways of Mykonos Town, hand in hand with your little ones. Suddenly, you stumble upon a quaint tavern tucked away in a hidden corner, its aroma of freshly baked baklava luring you inside.

And peeking out around the corner, clear blue water and one of the best view’s you have ever witnessed. As you indulge in culinary delights fit for the gods, you can’t help but marvel at the serendipitous moments that make family travel truly magical.

This was kind of how our morning went, until about 10am. The streets filled up and it was so crowded we decided to head to a beach club for the day before our 5pm dinner reservation. We got in a taxi and took it about 15 minutes to Pasaji Mykonos….which I researched was one of the more “tame and family-friendly” beach clubs. No breakfast shots or standing on tables waving napkins and dancing for us on this trip.

The dreamy idyllic beaches...

But alas, no family vacation to Mykonos would be complete without spending a beautiful sun-soaked day at one of its idyllic beaches. From the family-friendly shores of Ornos Beach to the windsurfing haven of Kalafatis Beach, there’s a slice of paradise to suit every taste. So, pack your sunscreen, grab your sandcastle-building tools, and prepare for a day of endless fun under the Mediterranean sun. We absolutely loved Pasaji! The water was crystal clear, no waves, and you can order food and drinks without even getting up from your chair. Paradise!

After our day at the beach, we headed to Negrita to indulge in some adult beverages, STUNNING VIEWS, and its culinary delights—There was a 70 euro per person (for the 2 adults) minimum spend just to book our reservation. Just to keep in mind! Also I had made the reservation 3 months ahead of time and 4:30 and 5pm were the only time a lot left available!

But traveling with little ones with voracious appetites….for even the pickiest of eaters are sure to find something to enjoy. I knew we’d have no problems with a minimum spend. The kids enjoyed Nutella and honey pancakes with fresh fruit, while Joseph and I opted for salads and sandwiches. The sunset and waves crashing right next to the table made for probably the most beautiful dinner spot we’ve ever had.

As the golden hour casts its ethereal glow upon the island, gather your little adventurers for a sunset stroll along the picturesque waterfront. Tons of photo ops everywhere in little Venice. Especially at sunset. As the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery hues, you can sit by the windmills and watch the sun dip beneath the ocean. There were several ice cream shops nearby. So the kids all relaxed and ate ice cream while we watched the sun go down. They can’t wait to go back
